What should you do if you encounter an unethical cop?

It seems that both attorneys and police officers share a unique problem. A few rotten tomatoes spoil the public perception of the whole bunch. The lawyers at Boone Beale, PLLC can attest that there are only a handful of attorneys that cheat the system or otherwise act inappropriately – the vast majority are similar to plumbers, electricians, IT professionals, or any other type of hard-working Americans. Likewise, there are only a few cops that lie and cheat; however, they also ruin public perception for the majority that are honest ethical people doing their best to serve and protect. The few rotten tomatoes invariably cause the public to distrust both attorneys and cops.

What should you do if you encounter an unethical cop? What happens if the cop lies during the prosecution or preparation of your case? Did the arresting officer search you or your vehicle without permission? Did they tell you that you were required by law to submit to the field sobriety tests? Do you feel they acted inappropriately?

Unfortunately most judges will believe the word of the arresting officer over the word of the accused. If you want your rights protected you need to fight for them. They are no longer given out for free. It is important to arm yourself with the knowledge of what rights you do and do not have when confronted by a member of the law enforcement community and act accordingly. If already charged, you need to contact a skilled criminal defense lawyer that has worked on cases similar to yours. The knowledgeable criminal defense attorneys and drunk driving defense attorneys at Boone Beale can help. Call us at any time, day or night. The Washington Post published a story on January 24, 2010 regarding a police sting operation for drug dealers. The defense all but proved beyond a reasonable doubt that the three police officers were lying through their teeth to get a conviction. While most of the jury believed the accused was guilty, the jury ended up hung and unable to produce a final verdict because the majority wanted to acquit due to the fact that the cops lied.
